Tennessee Nursing Home Under Investigation
In a story today from WDXE Tennessee Web Site: Posted on December 07, 2008
Countryside Healthcare on Bufflao Road in Lawrenceburg is under investigation after nurses at the Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia alleged that an elderly man was so neglected he had mold growing out of his mouth. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now involved.
The 65-year-old victim can’t speak due to a medical condition, but staff at Maury Regional Medical Center spoke up and complained about what they saw on the man last week. District Attorney Mike Bottoms told WDXE Radio in Lawrenceburg that while examining the victim for low blood pressure, nurses saw other things and felt like it needed to be looked in to, and that’s when they called authorities.
A Lawrence County Sheriffs deputy took pictures of the man in the hospital and noted he had mold growing in and around his mouth as well as an open wound on his leg. Bottoms said he feels this is a serious matter.
The WDXE website also notes that the Department of Health most recently inspected the facility in September, where inspectors noted nine health deficiencies all of which have been corrected.
In my career as a elder abuse and neglect attorney I have seen many forms of elder neglect including situations of insect and rodent infestation, pressure sores, and extremely poor hygiene provided to the residents. This neglect can lead to even more concerning issues such as dehydration, pressure sores, falls, and in the most extreme cases wrongful death.
